Formulators' Corner:

Designed for skin after sun stress.

Skin needs care after sun exposure

SPF is essential while the skin is exposed to the sun. Yet after UV, heat, and infrared radiation, the skin barrier still needs targeted support.

Sun exposed skin is not only warm. It is stressed, dehydrated, and in need of recovery.

This Post Sun Recovery Serum concept was developed for exactly this moment. It is a lightweight, clear gel serum powered by Ectoin® natural, designed to support hydration, soothing, and barrier repair after sun stress.

Why post sun skin is different

After sun exposure, the skin is not only warm. It is stressed and in recovery mode. UV, heat, and infrared radiation can compromise the skin barrier, reduce moisture retention, activate inflammatory pathways, and increase oxidative stress.

Key skin stress factors after sun exposure

TEWL can increase
This means the barrier is disrupted and moisture escapes faster.

IL 6 can rise
This indicates activation of pro inflammatory pathways.

MMP activity can increase
This can contribute to collagen degradation.

ROS can rise
This increases oxidative stress in skin cells.

The formulation concept

The Post Sun Recovery Serum is a lightweight gel concept designed for recovery focused skin care. It combines Ectoin® natural with supportive ingredients for hydration, soothing, and barrier support.

Ectoin® natural is used as the lead active at 1.0 percent and can be processed cold or hot up to 60 °C. This gives formulators flexibility during development.

The concept also includes panthenol, niacinamide, allantoin, low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, and sodium carbomer. Together, these ingredients support a clear, lightweight gel texture with a target pH of 5.0 to 5.5.

Suggested formula at a glance

Water
Forms the base of the serum and dissolves the water phase actives.

Ectoin® natural, 1.0 percent
Acts as the lead active.

Panthenol, 0.5 percent
Supports soothing and barrier care.

Niacinamide, 2.0 percent
Supports the skin barrier.

Allantoin, 0.2 percent
Supports soothing and regeneration.

Low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate, 0.1 percent
Boosts hydration.

Glycerin, 3.0 percent
Works as a humectant.

Sodium carbomer, 0.2 to 0.4 percent
Creates a clear, lightweight gel texture.

Preservative system and pH adjustment
Added as needed. The target pH is 5.0 to 5.5.

Simple processing for efficient development

The formulation process is straightforward and suitable for efficient product development.

Combine the water phase

Ectoin® natural, panthenol, allantoin, and niacinamide are dissolved in water. Hot processing up to 60 °C or cold processing is possible.

Prepare the gel phase

The gelling agents and sodium hyaluronate are dispersed in glycerin.

Mix gently

The gel phase is added to the water phase under gentle stirring and mixed for approximately 15 minutes.

Adjust and check

The preservative system is added and the pH is adjusted to 5.0 to 5.5. Finally, viscosity, pH, and appearance are checked.

The target is a clear, elegant, lightweight gel serum.
