What is Ectoin?

Ectoin is a natural molecule belonging to the group of extremolytes, which are substances produced by extremophilic microorganisms that thrive in harsh environments like salt lakes, deserts, and polar ice. These microorganisms use Ectoin to protect themselves from extreme conditions such as high UV radiation, dryness, and salinity.

For over 30 years, bitop AG has been at the forefront of Ectoin research and production. The company's innovative fermentation process enables the large-scale, sustainable production of Ectoin, making it available for various applications in healthcare, dermatology, and cosmetics. bitop AG has conducted more than 40 clinical studies to proof its safety and efficacy to improve the symptoms of inflammatory diseases like Allergy, Asthma, Dermatitis, Cough&Cold as well as Dry Eye Syndrom and Skin Aging.

Today, every year millions of consumers worldwide trust Ectoin-based products

About the Molecule

History of Ectoin

Ectoin was discovered in 1986 by German scientists led by Prof. Dr. Galinski in the Egyptian desert, where they identified microorganisms thriving in highly saline environments. The key to their survival was Ectoin, a molecule that stabilizes cells and protects them from environmental stress.

Production

Initially, the production of Ectoin was a challenging, small-scale process. However, bitop AG revolutionized this in the early 1990s by developing a fermentation method that enables the large-scale production of Ectoin. Today, the company’s state-of-the-art facilities in Dortmund produce Ectoin in a highly sustainable way, reducing water usage, CO2 emissions, and energy consumption, while maintaining the highest purity standards.

"Ectoin is a unique natural phenomenon that, through its remarkable properties, provides the strongest known natural cell protection"

Prof. Dr. Dieter Oesterhelt, Max Planck Institute

Lasker Award Winner 2021

Mode of Action

Ectoin forms a protective Hydro-Complex around cells, helping to maintain the stability and integrity of cellular membranes. This shield prevents stress-induced damage by binding water molecules, thus preserving cellular hydration and stopping inflammatory processes. Ectoin’s ability to reduce oxidative stress and modulate inflammatory responses makes it a powerful natural ingredient for medical and cosmetic applications.

Milestone: Medical Device Certification

One of the key milestones for bitop AG was the certification of Ectoin as an active ingredient for medical devices. Ectoin has been proven effective in treating a range of conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and dry eyes. Medical products like Ectoin Nasal Spray and Ectoin Eye Drops are widely used and trusted by healthcare professionals and patients for their natural, side-effect-free relief.

Top Claims for Medical Usage

Today, you can find it in various products ranging from skin care to medical devices all over the world. This success story has started with bitop conducting the basic research and clinical studies, developing products and a state-of-the-art biotechnological production process that ensures highest quality and purity.
